🛫 What occurred


Air India Flight AI‑171 Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner had left Ahmedabad at approximately 1:38 PM IST, with its destination being London Gatwick. About 30 seconds after the takeoff, the aircraft collided with a hostel of a medical college in Meghaninagar locality of Ahmedabad .



The plane was travelling with 242 people (230 passengers and 12 crew). Sadly, 241 people on board were killed and 28 or more people on the ground were confirmed dead, many others having been injured .


miracle of all miracles, one passenger was alive, a British national of Indian origin, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who was sitting at 11A. He managed to flee through a damaged door and is still in hospital .

🌎 Wider effect & reaction


The accident scene was destroyed and there was destruction in the hostel and around the buildings. Recovery teams supported by police and sniffer dogs are still searching the area and doing DNA tests to identify the victims .


On June 13, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site and the hospital, condoled with the families, and had a high-level review meeting with officials .


Some efforts towards compensation: Tata Group has announced that it is supporting the families and will pay them 1 crore each as compensation, Air India has updated its social media profile picture to a bereaved black dot .


Only one patient only saved but all died!

🔴 Cause & investigations


Experts and CCTV analyses speculate it could be because of dual engine failure, bird strike, fuel problem, wrong flap position or the landing gear not retracting. An ultimate cause can cost as long as a year .


One of the black boxes has been located and investigating international agencies such as AAIB India, AAIB UK, U.S. NTSB, FAA, Boeing and GE are involved in the investigation.
